At the age of 15, Manchester cat Samson scooped a bronze medal and a
silver bowl award in an international competition to find the
world’s cutest pet, beating off competition from scores of puppies,
kittens and other cuddly cuties. Now he is also the star of a
bright and fun children’s picture book.

The fictional picture book, which has been created and illustrated
by Samson’s owner Angela Cater, follows the adventures of a farm cat
who leaves his home to take up a new life as Sailor Sam on board a
ship – with hilarious consequences.

Angela, also drafted friends and family to help out with the book
using her cousins and their children as inspiration for
illustrations of sailors and other characters.

The book proved extremely popular with the pupils at the independent
girls’ school where Angela works as School Secretary. She gave
readings to the prep school children and Samson made his first
public appearance there.

The book was initially released through a `self-publishing’ company,
but after numerous problems, Angela took the step of buying a batch
of ISBN numbers and reissuing the book herself, in the true sense of
self-publishing. Once Angela has recovered the costs of self-
publishing the book she will donate a percentage of all proceeds to
Riverhaven Elderly Cat Welfare in Devon, which cares for abandoned
elderly and disabled cats for the rest of their natural lives.
Despite being recently widowed and then diagnosed with breast
cancer, the owner, Jackie Southern, is dedicated to caring for up to
60 golden oldies.
